The History of the Ukulele
The ukulele is a small, four-stringed musical instrument that has its beginnings in Hawaii, and it is similar to a guitar but much smaller, lighter in build, and with a higher pitch. The word "ukulele" comes from the Hawaiian language and means "jumping flea," a name that refers to the quickness with which the fingers move over the strings.

The ukulele has a fascinating history that can be traced back to the 19th century. It is believed to have originated in the 1880s when Portuguese immigrants arrived in Hawaii and brought a small, four-stringed instrument called the machete de Braga. The Hawaiians quickly adopted this instrument and named it "ukulele," derived from the Hawaiian word for "jumping flea."

Over time, the ukulele evolved and became a popular instrument in Hawaii. It was often played at social gatherings and symbolized Hawaiian culture. In the early 20th century, the ukulele gained popularity in the United States, especially in the 1920s and 1930s. It became a popular Hawaiian music instrument and featured in many Hollywood films.
In the 21st century, the ukulele has continued to grow in popularity. It is now played by people of all ages and skill levels and is a common sight at music festivals and concerts. The ukulele has a unique, cheerful sound, making it a popular choice for solo performers and groups.

In a nutshell, the ukulele is a beloved musical instrument with a rich history that can be traced back to the 19th century. Its popularity has grown over the years and is now enjoyed by people worldwide. Whether you are a seasoned musician or just learning to play, the ukulele is an instrument that will bring joy and happiness to your life.
Kanilea's Master Luthier, Joe Souza tells of the history of the ukulele and how he came to be a master luthier and the crafting involved in making ukuleles.
